Frequently Asked Questions

Vertically farmed without GMOs, pesticides, or sprays, Oishii is changing the idea of what an American farm can be. Grown from seedling to berry, we grow unique Japanese varietals of strawberries in our farm in NJ, yielding perfectly ripe fruit that's always-in-season. At our farm, bees fly freely and pollinate just like in an outdoor environment. Oishii harmoniously marries nature with technology to grow something exceptional.

Vertical farming is a new frontier in agriculture and grants us the freedom to grow fresh strawberries indoors. We repurpose urban warehouses to create sustainable farms with a hyper-local ethos. Our strawberry plants are grown in rows and stacked vertically, with the utmost care for each flower and berry. We recreate a perfect day in Japan, growing our berries 365 days a year in idyllic indoor conditions that only produce the best fruit. Learn more about how our farms work here.

Our berries are better than organic. We only use natural pest control methods with zero sprays or pesticides, not even organic ones. They are non-GMO, nutrient-rich, always fresh, and always in season.

You'll probably indulge as soon as you get home! However, given our berries are pesticide-free, they will last a while in your fridge. We recommend eating them within three days of purchase for the most optimal and nutrient-dense experience. However, because they start in the best possible condition, they will still be delicious for some time afterward.

Both berries are equally delicious; they just have slightly different flavor profiles. It's up to you which one you prefer. Try them and let us know what you think!

The Koyo Berry has a refreshing sweetness, bright aroma, subtle tartness, and slightly firm texture.

The Omakase Berry has a delicate sweetness, aromatics that fill the room, and a deliciously creamy texture.

Its light red color is a unique characteristic of this varietal of strawberry. This particular fruit only grows for a short time in the Japanese Alps and is unlike American varietals of berry. It's almost a different fruit entirely. The Koyo Berry has a reddish tint and is more similar to berries grown in the USA. Both berries are perfectly ripe and absolutely delicious.

Our farmers take the utmost pride in their work, ensuring every berry is as delicious as the last. With typical strawberries, more times than not, some are bruised and flavorless. With our fruit, we want to provide the most consistent product possible, offering a one-of-a-kind experience. It's the perfect, perfectly ripe berry every single time.

Because our berries are delicate, we do not ship them. We plan to expand our operation, so follow us on Instagram to find out when we're coming to stores near you.

Because we grow our berries without pesticides, they never need to be washed. Our berries are delicate, so keep the tray flat and never jostle or shake, as this can cause bruising, resulting in a less delicious experience.

Our berries are not certified kosher, but we maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, with berries so pure they don’t even need to be washed.

Our berries are special, and they deserve the most protective packaging possible. Based on a Japanese design, they are individually cradled, protecting them from bruising, and also decreasing food waste. The sleek design also adds to the experience, making them the perfect gift for loved ones.

In terms of consistent improvement, packaging is our number one priority.

America wastes over 40% of the food it grows, resulting in a negative environmental impact. How many times have you bought a pack of berries and ended up throwing half away after realizing a few too many were overripe, unappealing, or even fuzzy? Our packaging protects our berries, and keeps them in perfect condition, preventing bruising with zero food waste.

However, there are many things regarding packaging that we can improve on.

We are incredibly passionate about a sustainable future, so we are looking toward other options that still protect our berries, but are even more environmentally friendly.

In doing this, we recently added a compostable plant-based cellophane to our packaging to protect our berries while they are in transit. The biodegradable protective film helps us to mitigate food waste and maintain the premium quality our customers know and love. Please toss it in your food scraps or compost collection bin.

Sustainability is a top priority for Oishii, and we’re working hard to introduce fully compostable packaging to reduce our reliance on single use plastics once and for all.
